Most people have come across led lighting in the forms of Christmas tree lights or high power led torches but are unaware of the many uses that it can be put to in the home and garden. This is understandable as the technology involved has come a long way from when most people first encountered it in digital watches in the 1970’s.

Led lighting is set to become the standard way of lighting our homes in the near future with the gradual phasing out of conventional tungsten filament bulbs and because the lighting industry is rapidly cutting back any further investment in the development of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). CFL light bulbs are widely regarded as ungainly, garish and they also suffer from poor start up times as well as having a poor quality of light. They are also a problem for the environment as they contain mercury vapour and the prospect of landfill sites being filled up with thousands of CFL light bulbs has prompted a rethink on their use.

The advantages that led lighting offers over other forms of lighting are that led lighting has an extremely long life span typically up to 20 years. It is also extremely efficient to run using only 90% of the energy of filament bulb and less than half the energy of CFL low energy bulb. Led lights are also very safe as they convert virtually all of the electricity they use into light they never get hot and as they are completely waterproof they can be used in wide variety of places.

Led lights are ideal for replacing halogen spotlights in the home as well as being put to use as display lighting and for creating stunning feature lighting using an almost infinite variety of colours.
